The Italians’ honeymoon with the Meloni government is over. In some matters the citizens approve the action of the right-wing coalition that governs the country, but in many others, they do not. According to polling data presented today by the newspaper La Repubblica, Italians who say they trust their prime minister within a month have dropped from 46% to 42%. At the same time, 50% of the respondents answered that they do not approve of the government’s action.
As far as immigration is concerned, which is a main element of the entire government strategy, Italians do not agree with Meloni. In other words, with a percentage of 48%, the opinion prevails that the special humanitarian protection for immigrants and refugees who face deprivation of basic rights in their countries of origin should not be abolished.
In general, extreme positions and approaches are rejected. Like, for example, the proposal for a law, made by a member of the Adelphia party in Italy, which calls for fines to be imposed on those who use foreign words and expressions.
Reservations about the course of reforms in the economy
On the contrary, citizens with a percentage of 56% state that it is correct to change the criteria for accessing the unemployment benefit so that it is linked to a real effort aimed at training and finding a job.
At the same time, they express reservations regarding the possibility of the reforms being able to be carried out in order for the country to receive all the financing provided by the Recovery and Resilience Plan. This is a huge amount, over one hundred and ninety billion euros. Italians are asking Meloni and her ministers to focus on creating jobs, improving public health and protecting the economy.
What actually excels is a realistic and not an ideological approach, something the Italian prime minister should take seriously in any of her next moves. Because the grace period, after the changing of the guard at the government house last October, is clearly now over for good.
