The “Seven New Pyramids for Cairo” envisions the Marchisciana Saverio Adriano as a group of scattered inverted pyramids above the noisy Cairo. The structures proposed by Italian architect look like huge steel spiders, with very tall and slender legs that look like they are besieging the Egyptian capital. They emerge as centers of culture and education while serving as points of observation of the big city and enjoyment of the view.
The modern Cairo is a chaotic area of housing and cement that is rapidly taking over traditional date plantations and old orchards. The remaining arable land in Egypt shrinks and is replaced by large neighborhoods saturated with buildings, without parks or public spaces.
The aim of the proposal is to spread positive ideas and to try to revitalize the chaotic African metropolis. The design as inverted pyramids, with their tops pointing downwards, is a critique of the out-of-control growth of the homeless, which destroys nature and vulnerable ecosystems. Their large dimensions initiate a dialogue with their pyramids Pharaoh and represent a new city of culture.
Each of the “new pyramids” will bear the name of a deity of the ancient Egyptian pantheon. They will host School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Papyrus Conservation and Rehabilitation Institute, National Library, School of Traditional Arts, University Department of Botany and other educational facilities. Combined, they will form a cultural ring, which will have the opportunity to educate the new generations based on the principles of a better landscape and the sustainability of the environment.
They will be connected to a single rail transmission system, with stations at the base of each. Terraces at the top of the inverted pyramids will serve as large squares with panoramic views, where students and visitors will be able to stroll and chat in a modern version of the Athenian market.
