“It smells like gunpowder” in Kosovo – Two protesters were injured by gunfire

Tension is escalating in the north Kosovo and in the city of Zvetsan there was a clash between the protest suppression unit of the international peacekeeping force – KFOR with Serbs protesters.

KFOR men tried to free an armored vehicle of the Kosovo police that was under the cordon of protesters in front of the city hall and the clash occurred. THE KFOR used tear gas and stun grenades. Protesters responded by throwing stones and other objects while also setting fire to a Kosovo police vehicle.

Serbian Public Television (RTS) reported that there are casualties on both sides. Serbian Defense Ministry Secretary Nemanja Starovic told RTS that two protesters were wounded by gunshots. One injured person is in critical condition, Starovich said.

The Tanjug news agency reported that one of its reporters was injured when a stun grenade landed at his feet.

Late in the afternoon, as relayed by the Athens News Agency, the protesters left the center of the city of Zvečan and the situation calmed down, however, as reported by the Serbian media, the tension remains and people are worried about the developments.

There were no incidents in the other three cities of northern Kosovo where demonstrations took place today.
