The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), of the United Nations (UN), visited the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, on Thursday (25), to assess the situation after the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam.
In a note published on social networks, Rafael Grossi said that it is essential that the water remains at the same level for the safety of the plant.
“There is evaporation, there may be some leakage, but it has to be kept at that level. With the water that is here, the plant can be safe for some time”, explained the head of the UN nuclear agency.
“The plant will work to replenish water so that security functions can continue as normal,” Grossi continued, adding that he would monitor closely.
The plant is held by Russian forces and is not far from where a Ukrainian offensive in the south is unfolding. This is Grossi’s third visit to the nuclear power plant since last September.
