Israel’s attack in Lebanon Mata Commander of Islamic Armed Group

On Tuesday (22), a new attack of Israeli drones later confirmed south of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, killed one of the main commanders of the armed group Jama’a Islamiya.

Israel’s defense forces (IDF) announced in a statement that they killed Hussein Atawi, a “key figure in Jama’a Islamiya with Hamas calls.” He would be involved in the planning and advancement of “terrorist” activities of Lebanon to Israeli territory, targeting IDF soldiers on the North Border.

According to another statement, published by Jama’a Islamiya, ATAWI was one of the main commanders of the Sunni Islamic group, known as FAJR forces. He was killed while driving from his home to his office in Beirut.

FAJR forces fired rockets against Israel through the southern border of Lebanon during a one-year conflict and ended in November 2024 with a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah. Israeli air strikes killed several members of the group during the conflict.

Since the ceasefire, Israel continued to make attacks on Lebanese territory, mainly against combatants of the armed group Hezbollah and their arms deposits. Israeli troops also still occupy five positions in hills in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon, Hezbollah and Jama’a Islamiya condemned the attacks and the presence of Israeli troops, calling them violations of the truce and sovereignty of the Lebanon. Israel states that combatants and weapons represent a threat to Israeli civilians.
