Israeli forces surround last Hamas strongholds in northern Gaza, says defense minister

Israeli troops are surrounding Hamas’ last two strongholds in the northern Gaza Strip, according to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

He stated that Hamas battalions in the Jabalya and Shejaiya areas are “on the verge of disbandment. The number of people who surrender and leave these places shows us what is happening.”

Gallant also highlighted that the fighters from the radical Islamic group who surrendered said they lacked weapons and food.

“We are close to a breaking point in the north of the Gaza Strip. Anyone who prefers to surrender, as hundreds have already done, we will spare their lives,” the official commented, calling for the remaining Hamas fighters to surrender.

The minister made similar comments on Friday (8) about the progress of the Israeli military, when he said he saw signs that Hamas is “on the brink of collapse in Gaza”.

Additionally, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) announced that more than 500 Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters were detained last month “and transferred for further interrogation by the ISA and the Unit 504,” referring to an Israeli army intelligence unit.

Since the end of the lull in fighting, just over a week ago, around 140 members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad have been detained in the Gaza Strip, according to the IDF.

For the first time, the Israeli military also published photographs of suspected fighters who surrendered.

Unlike a series of videos that emerged last week of men apparently surrendering to Israeli forces, which showed them only in their underwear, the two photographs published on Monday showed men fully clothed.
