Israeli forces completed Rafah’s siege, they say military

Israeli military said on Saturday (12) had completed the siege of the city of Rafah in Gaza. The action is part of a plan announced to take more areas of the enclave, accompanied by large scale withdrawals of the population.

The military issued repeated vacancy alerts to thousands of Palestinians in Rafah since they resumed operations in Gaza on March 18, forcing them to lodge into a smaller and smaller, sea-limited space.

Israel said on April 2 that troops began to take an area called Morag Axis, a reference to an ancient Israeli settlement located between the cities of Rafah and Khan Youis in southern Gaza.

Thousands of Palestinians fled Rafah, an area of 60 square kilometers bordering Egypt to the south.

“In the last 24 hours, the 36th division troops have completed the Morag Route, separating Rafah and Khan Younis,” the military said on Saturday.

The Israeli offensive in Gaza was launched after the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked the south of Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and hostage, according to Israeli counts.

More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed in the offensive since then, according to Hamas -controlled Enclave health officials. Most of the population has been displaced and much of Gaza is in ruins.

Israel restarted the offensive in March after effectively abandoned the ceasefire in force since January. The campaign will continue, he says, until the remaining 59 hostages are released and Hamas is expelled from Gaza.

Hamas states that he will free hostages only as part of an agreement that puts an end to war and rejected the demands to testify the weapons. A Hamas delegation was expected in Cairo over the weekend to discuss new truce proposals, according to a group source.
