Israeli flags on Copacabana beach remember a month of war in the Middle East

Today Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro, dawned with Israeli flags, as a peaceful demonstration in defense and memory of the victims in Israel, especially the children kidnapped by the terrorist group Hamas.

The initiative, which was organized by the NGO Rio de Paz, spread 1,400 Israeli flags on the beach, as well as photos of children who are still abducted. In addition, a banner was also installed with the phrase: “In memory of the victims of terrorism in Israel”. The act took place in front of the Copacabana Palace hotel.

According to Antonio Carlos Costa, founder of the NGO Rio de Paz, the peaceful protest aims to “express sincere solidarity with the families of the victims of the terrorist attack, condemn terrorism and call for the immediate release of the kidnapped hostages”.

Another action was carried out by the NGO last Friday (3), also in defense of the children killed or kidnapped during the attack. On the occasion, 120 shrouds with roses and Palestinian flags were installed on the beach sand next to the names of each of these children.

“This is the most heinous side of a war in which, in the name of the right to self-defense, innocent people who have no way to defend themselves are killed. It’s up to us to fight for them, just like we do in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro”, says the organization’s founder.

Regarding the protest held today, Antonio Carlos understands that “not protesting against the Hamas terrorist attack means loss of legitimacy to protest against any other violation of rights”.

Children in Gaza are in a catastrophic situation

According to UNICEF, in a text published last Monday (6), thousands of children were killed and thousands more injured in Gaza, as a result of the conflict with Israel. Many of them find themselves without access to water and food. According to the publication “in all wars, it is children who suffer first and who suffer most”.

According to data from the NGO Save the Children (save the children, in Portuguese), so far 3,826 children have been killed in three weeks of conflict. A number that exceeds the annual average of children killed in conflict zones around the world since 2019.
