The Israeli military said it struck several targets in Yemen linked to the Iran-aligned Houthi movement on Thursday, including Sanaa International Airport and three ports along the western coast.
Broadcaster Al Masirah, the main television news channel run by the Houthis, said two people were killed in the airport attacks, one person was killed in the port attacks, and 11 others were injured.
At first, there was no comment from the Houthis, who have repeatedly fired drones and missiles at Israel, in what they describe as acts of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
In addition to attacking military infrastructure in the Yemeni ports of Hodeidah, Salif and Ras Kanatib, the Israeli military said it also hit the country’s Hezyaz and Ras Kanatib power plants.
After the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel will continue its mission until it is completed: “We are determined to sever this terrorist arm from Iran’s axis.”
The prime minister has been strengthened domestically by Israel’s military campaign against Iranian-backed Hezbollah forces in southern Lebanon and the destruction of most of the Syrian Army’s strategic weapons.
For more than a year, Houthi attacks have disrupted international shipping routes, forcing companies to take longer and more expensive journeys, which in turn has fueled fears of global inflation.
Israel has instructed its diplomatic missions in Europe to try to get the Houthis designated as a terrorist organization.
The UN Security Council is expected to meet next Monday (30) to discuss the Houthis’ attacks against Israel, said Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, last Wednesday (25).
On Saturday, the Israeli Armed Forces failed to intercept a Yemeni missile that landed in the Tel Aviv-Jaffa area, injuring 14 people.
