Israeli airstrikes and shelling against the city of Rafah, in southern Gaza, resulted in the deaths of several people and injured others, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa on Saturday (10).
According to medical authorities cited by Wafa, 25 people, mainly women and children, were killed as a result of airstrikes and artillery shelling of houses in the center and north of Rafah.
When the CNN asked for more details about the reported attacks in Rafah, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson said: “In response to Hamas' barbaric attacks, the IDF is operating to dismantle Hamas' military and administrative capabilities.”
“In stark contrast to Hamas' intentional attacks against Israeli men, women and children, the Israel Defense Forces follows international law and takes whatever precautions possible to reduce harm to civilians,” the spokesperson added.
There is growing international alarm over Rafah, home to more than a million people, after Israel said it would soon enter the city as part of its ground campaign against Hamas.
