Israel says it will not accept a deal that leaves Hamas in power or hostages in Gaza

Israel will not accept a ceasefire agreement with Hamas that keeps the armed group in power or hostages in the Gaza Strip, Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy said on Tuesday (23).

He added that they were working on the release of the hostages, but declined to elaborate, saying that lives were at stake.

Asked about reports of ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, Levy highlighted that the objectives of the war remained unchanged.

“[Os objetivos são] the destruction of Hamas government and military capabilities in the Gaza Strip and the return of all hostages. There will be no ceasefire that leaves hostages in Gaza and Hamas in power,” he warned.

A CNN reported exclusively on Monday (22) that Israel has proposed that top Hamas leaders leave the Gaza Strip as part of a broader ceasefire agreement.

Despite the war, which has lasted four months, the military has failed to capture or kill any of Hamas' most important leaders in the Gaza Strip and has not affected about 70% of Hamas' fighting strength, according to Israel's own estimates.
