The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claim to have carried out attacks “along the line of contact” with the Gaza Strip during the night of Sunday (22) to “kill terrorist squads” while intensifying bombings in the Palestinian enclave. The Israelis are expected to launch a robust ground attack in the coming days.
“Armored and infantry attacks were carried out during the night. These offensives are attacks to kill terrorist squads, preparing for our next phase of the war”, said Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari this Monday (23).
The offensive also aimed to locate and search for people taken hostage during the radical Islamic group Hamas’ terror attacks on Israel on October 7 ahead of the “next stages of the war”, Hagari added.
Hamas militants killed 1,400 people in Israel during their incursion earlier this month and took hundreds hostage.
Since then, the IDF has increased its military repression in Gaza, while flooding the border with troops.
It has also launched attacks in the occupied West Bank since the Hamas incursion, arresting hundreds of Palestinians who reportedly included lawmakers, prominent figures, journalists and former detainees who served long sentences in Israeli prisons.
Israeli forces launched heavy bombardment of Gaza overnight, which killed dozens of Palestinians. At least 4,651 people have been killed in the enclave due to continued shelling, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza. The number does not include Sunday’s victims.
Hagari said on Monday that Israeli airstrikes over the past 24 hours had hit “hundreds of terrorist targets” in Gaza, including the tunnel network used by Hamas.
