Israel presents report to UN Court on measures in Gaza, official says

Israel presented this Monday (26) a report to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the measures taken to comply with a provisional decision ordering it to avoid war actions in the Gaza Strip that could constitute genocide, an Israeli official said.

The source did not provide details about the content of the report, which was delivered hours before the deadline for delivery.

Last month, the UN's top court ordered Israel to refrain from any acts that could fall under the Genocide Convention.

Furthermore, he also ordered Israel to ensure that its troops do not commit genocidal acts against Palestinians, after South Africa accused the country of state-led genocide. Israel and its Western allies called the accusation unfounded.

In the ruling, the court highlighted that Israel had to specifically prevent and punish any public incitements to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and preserve evidence relating to any allegations of genocide in the territory.

He also stated that the country must take measures to improve the humanitarian situation of Palestinian civilians.

A final decision in the case could take years.

War leaves destruction

The war was triggered after an attack by Hamas members who left Gaza and attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages, according to Israel.

Vowing to destroy Hamas, Israel responded with air and ground strikes on the densely populated coastal territory, which killed more than 29,700 people, according to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry.

The war has displaced most of the Gaza Strip's 2.3 million inhabitants and caused widespread famine and disease.
