Israel presents a new proposal for ceasefire in Gaza

Egypt has presented a new Israeli proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, according to the broadcaster Al Qahera News TV, which is affiliated with the Egyptian government. However, a high Hamas employee said that at least two elements of the proposal were unfeasible.

Citing sources, Al Qahera said the mediators were waiting for Hamas’s response.

The Palestinian group said in a statement that he was studying the proposal and will deliver the answer as soon as possible.

Earlier, Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas’s representative, told Reuters that the proposal did not meet the main requirement of the Palestinian group, which would be that Israel committed to the definitive end of the offensives.

In the proposal, Israel also asked for the first time the disarmament of Hamas in the next phase of negotiations. But Abu Zuhri stated that “delivering the weapons of resistance is a million red lines, and is not subject to consideration, much less discussion,” he said.

Israel did not immediately comment on the proposal.

Palestinian and Egyptian sources said the last round of negotiations, held at Cairo to restore the ceasefire and free the Israeli hostages, ended without any advance.

Hamas insists that Israel commit to ending the war and removing its forces from the Gaza Strip, according to the last three-phase ceasefire agreement that came into force in late January. However, Israel said that it will not end the war unless Hamas is eliminated and returns the remaining hostages in Gaza.

“Hamas is ready to deliver the hostages at once in exchange for the end of the war and the removal of Gaza’s Israeli military forces,” said Abu Zuhri.

Since the resumption of his military campaign last month, Israeli forces have killed more than 1,500 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health officials. Hamas has moved hundreds of thousands of people and imposed a blockade on all supplies that enter the limits of the territory.

Meanwhile, 59 Israeli hostages remain in the hands of the militants. Israel believes that 24 of them are alive.
