Israel made air strikes on military bases and infrastructure sites in the Syrian cities of Damascus, Hama and Homs, the Israeli army said on Wednesday (2).
Israel spent years conducting air strikes in Syria during the government of former President Bashar al-Assad, aiming at Iran’s linked military facilities and transfers of tehran weapons for the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, which was implemented in Syrian territory.
This route of weapons was interrupted when Assad was deposed, but Israel continued to attack on Syrian military basis.
The bombings hit the Military Airport in the Syrian City of Hama and the surroundings of the Scientific Research Center in the Barzeh neighborhood of Damascus, according to Syrian state media and local authorities.
Israel had already bombed facilities from the Scientific Research Center shortly after Assad was deposed by Islamic rebels on December 8, claiming that the center was used for the development of guided missiles and chemical weapons.
Israel also said on Wednesday that he attacked the T4 air base in Homs province, which was repeatedly hit by Israel over the past week.
Safety sources also reported victims after the air strikes in Hama, but no official deaths were released by the Syrian state media.
“Israel has completely destroyed Hama’s air base to ensure it is not used. This is a systematic bombardment to destroy the military’s main air bases of the country,” a Syrian military source told Reuters, adding that about a dozen attacks destroyed the tracks, the tower, the arms deposits and the hangars.
The Hama Air Base, located west of the city, is one of the main air bases of the country, which was widely used during the 13 -year conflict between Assad and the rebels, before its overthrow, as a main launching point in areas previously controlled by the opposition in the North.
Israel and Syria have witnessed an increase in violence throughout the border, marking greater friction between the two countries after the installation of a new Islamic leadership after the Fall of Assad of Power.
Since then, Israel has said that it will not tolerate the presence of Islamic militants in southern Syria and sent their own troops to the Syrian border zone. Syrian leadership said it has no intention of opening a front against Israel.
