Israel erases a message of regret about the death of Pope Francis

The Israeli government shared and then excluded a post on social networks with condolence messages for Pope Francis’ death. Israel did not explain the reason for the decision, but local media states that it is a critique of Francisco’s lines about the war in Gaza.

The verified account @israel posted on Monday a message in the X that said, “Rest in peace, Pope Francis. May his memory be a blessing,” along with an image of the Pope visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem Post cited officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs saying that the Pope made “statements against Israel” and that the publication on the social network was a “error.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel did not comment on the case.

Francisco, who died on Monday at the age of 88, suggested in November last year that the global community should assess whether the Israel’s military campaign in Gaza classifies as a genocide of the Palestinian people in some of his most explicit criticism of Israel’s conduct in the war against Hamas.

In January, the Pope also called the humanitarian situation in Gaza “shameful”, causing criticism of the Jewish chief rabbi of Rome that accused Francisco of “selective indignation.”

Israel says the accusations of genocide are unfounded and that it is exclusively behind Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who leads an far right coalition of religious and nationalist parties, did not comment on the Pope’s death.

However, Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday sent a message of condolences to Christians in the Holy Land and around the world, describing Francis as “a man of deep faith and boundless compassion.”

Relations between the Catholic Church and Judaism have improved in recent decades after centuries of animosity.

Pope Francis was generally careful during his 12 -year -old pontificate about taking sides in conflict, and he condemned the growth of anti -Semitic groups while also speaking by telephone with the small Christian community of Gaza every night during the war.

In 2014, Francis visited the Wall Wall – the most sacred prayer place of Judaism – and also prayed in a section of a wall built by Israel in the Someline dividing Jerusalem and Belém.
