Israel: Biden’s tour of the region may herald the creation of a common market in the Middle East

Israel’s Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman said today he hopes US President Joe Biden’s tour of the region this week will lead to the creation of a common market in the Middle East that will include Saudi Arabia.

Biden will visit Israel on Wednesday and then travel to Saudi Arabia on Friday. The White House has announced that among the goals of this tour is “expanding regional economic and cooperation.”

When asked during a conference organized by the newspaper Calcalist what he hopes will come out of Biden’s visit, Lieberman replied: “The creation of a new, common market in the Middle East. That is the big challenge.”

“It will change the reality here from one end to the other both in terms of security and in terms of economy. Therefore I hope that the emphasis of the Biden visit will be on the creation of this new market in the Middle East,” the Israeli minister added.

Israel normalized relations with four Arab countries in 2020 at the urging of the US, a move also with Riyadh’s blessing. But Saudi Arabia has not officially recognized Israel, as the Palestinian issue has not been resolved.

During the same conference, Israeli National Security Adviser Eyal Hulata said that in the context of the Biden visit “it is certainly possible that we will start talking about the eventual expansion of our markets in the region”.

“It is no coincidence that Biden is coming here on Wednesday and continuing on Friday to Saudi Arabia on a direct flight,” he added.

Lieberman pointed out that his vision for the region includes “a kind of arterial road that will cross the Middle East” and a rail network that will connect the partner countries.
