Israel has informed the United States that it has begun “carefully testing” flooding some tunnels in the Gaza Strip with seawater “on a limited basis” to test the ability to render the tunnel network unusable on a larger scale, a U.S. official said. The CNN this Tuesday (12).
The Israelis are not yet sure whether the action will work, according to the source, but they have assured the United States that they are being careful to test it only in tunnels where they believe hostages are not being held.

The Israeli prime minister’s office said it believes 135 hostages are still being held by Hamas, some of whom may be U.S. citizens.
The Israeli military said earlier this month that it had destroyed at least 500 tunnels in Gaza and located more than 800 around the Palestinian territory.
The IDF highlighted last week that many of the tunnel shafts “were located in civilian areas” and within civilian structures.
In 2021, Hamas claimed to have built 500 kilometers of tunnels under Gaza, although it is unclear whether this number was accurate or fabricated.
