Iraq: Drone rigged with explosives shot down near US base

The operation of the city's airport Arbil discontinued after one unmanned aircraftrigged with explosives, was shot down near a base where US forces are stationed, the official Iraqi news agency reported.

The drone crash caused “some injuries” and disrupted civilian flights, Iraqi military spokesman Yahya Rasool said.

The drone targeted the base where US and international anti-jihadist coalition forces are stationed in northern Iraq, a US official said.

Attacks on US forces and the coalition fighting Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have multiplied since the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip began.

The base is located near Arbil airport in Iraqi Kurdistan, Yahya Rasool noted. He did not specify how many are injured, nor in what condition they are.

The US official, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the coalition was currently assessing whether there were any injuries or property damage.
