International press repercusses Pope Francis’ death

The international press repercussions the death of Pope Francis, who was the victim of an irreversible stroke and heart failure on the morning of Monday (21).

Among the main vehicles that reported the death of the pontiff are Italian La Repubblica, the American The New York Times, the British network BBC and Argentines Clárin and La Nacion.

In the first paragraph of Clárin, the newspaper refers to the event as a tragedy, mentioning Francisco as a symbol that worked to make the church more inclusive.

La Nacion, on the other hand, uses the same emotional weight, saying that death caused “world commotion.”

CNN International highlighted honors made by world leaders, such as US President Donald Trump, the first Italian minister Giorgia Meloni and Argentine president Javier Milei. In Brazil, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also lamented Francisco’s death, decreeing seven days in the country.

The New York Times reported the Pope’s latest public appearances, where he “blessed tens of thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square for Easter Sunday” in a wheelchair.

Last week he went to a prison in Rome and told detainees he wanted to “be close to them” and that he was “praying for them and his families.” Asked by reporters in prison on how he was, he replied, “The best I can.”

In the BBC article, there is an excerpt highlighting the dismissal of an elaborate funeral rite, where he disobeys “the use of an ornate coffin and the display of his body on a high platform.”

The date of the funeral, a ceremony that will precede the burial of Francis, has not yet been released.
