The International LGBTQIA+ Pride Day, celebrated on June 28, will have several activities to raise awareness and fight against prejudice in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The program aimed at the LGBTQIA+ community and the entire city, integrates music with audiovisual experiences, information and awareness. The actions are free and end on July 3rd.
Debates, fairs, shows and special lighting will be promoted in monuments in the city to celebrate the date, including the Arcos da Lapa and the Museum of Tomorrow. The date marks the “Stonewall Rebellion”, which was a series of demonstrations by members of the LGBTQIA+ community against police raids in New York on June 28, 1969.
For the executive coordinator of Sexual Diversity of the City Hall of Rio, Carlos Tufvesson, the date marks the fight for citizenship of the LGBTQIA+ community in the world and should be publicized so that all society becomes aware of the violence suffered by this part of the population.
“More than ever, this date marks LGBT citizenship in the world. There, in 1969, it was the first time that this group claimed their citizenship, saying that if they have the same duties, they also have the same rights. We recently saw a report on violence showing that the number of violent deaths among LGBT people has grown by more than 30%,” says Tufvesson.
“So it is important to use this date to reinforce the citizenship of this group, discuss public policies and, above all, make the population aware of these problems and become allies in this fight”, he continues.
With six days of multiple and free programming, the Tribo Q Pride Festival 2022 will be held in Porto Maravilha, between June 28 and July 3, at the end of the LGBTQIA+ Pride month.
The festival will have great free concerts, in addition to audiovisual experiences, panels with experts and activists, debates on community themes, as well as a fair space dedicated to the promotion of LGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs and workshops. There will also be a curatorship for the selection of artists who will receive an investment for the production of the installations exhibited during the festival.
The estimate of the city hall of Rio is that 115 thousand people participate in the event throughout every day.
