Institutions collect more than 10 tons in donations to victims of the rain in SP

Civil Defense estimates show that more than 10 tons of items were collected for donations to victims of the heavy rains that hit cities on the coast of São Paulo.

In an interview with CNN the national president of Single Favela Central (Cufa) Preto Zezé, said that the team has provided support in the region since the second day after the storms.

“We’ve been in the territory since the second day, making the diagnosis and identifying the main problems and emergencies. Usually, when a situation like this happens, we have a short, medium and long term plan. In the short term, it’s now a matter of rescuing people, supporting the teams that are in the territory. Start mapping those who were the hardest hit and the needs for water, medicine and shelter for these people, ”he said.

According to Zezé, the flow of donations will be facilitated with the clearing of the roads that registered interdiction points due to landslides.

This Saturday morning (25), the Roads Department (DER) reported that traffic is released for light and heavy vehicles on the highways in the region of São Sebastião.

Only the section of KM 82 of the Mogi Bertioga highway (SP-098), in Biritiba-Mirim, next to the Sertãozinho River bridge, remains completely prohibited. The trip to the north coast can be made by the Anchieta-Imigrantes System, Rodovia dos Tamoios and Rodovia Oswaldo Cruz, depending on the point on Rio-Santos (SP-055).

“Many of our trucks are arriving in the city, around 10 trucks, with food, mattresses, medicine, biscuits and lots of water for people, since the issue of water supply is very difficult”, stated Zezé.

The president of Cufa highlights the union between non-governmental institutions with the federal, state and municipal governments in supporting the victims of the rains on the coast of São Paulo.

“We think it’s very important that political disputes, ideological differences are left out and that everyone is focused on action. We are even now mobilizing a large volunteer campaign. Anyone wishing to participate, join the Cufa networks, where all the guidelines are there”, he said.

So far, 57 deaths have been confirmed, 56 in São Sebastião and one in Ubatuba. Teams from the municipality of São Sebastião, with psychologists and social workers, work to welcome the victims’ families. Bodies of 53 victims were identified and released for burial. There are 19 adult men, 17 adult women and 17 children. The rains left more than 2,251 homeless and 1,815 homeless.

The State Department of Health informs that 22 adults and six children who were victims of the rains were treated, so far, at the Regional Hospital of the North Coast (HRLN). Of this total, 13 remain hospitalized in stable health. Another 10 patients have already been discharged from hospital and five have been transferred to other units.
