Inspection is essential to fight deforestation, says professor

Inspection is an essential point, although not the only one, to fight deforestation, he told the CNN the professor at the Department of Ecology at the University of Brasília (UnB) Mercedes Bustamante.

“No single option today is capable of dealing with a complex problem such as deforestation, but monitoring and inspection are central aspects”, said Bustamente.

“Deforestation today no longer fits into the economy of different countries, not only because of the climate impact, but because of the impact we have on biodiversity and other ecosystem services as well.”

Leaders from more than 100 nations pledged to end this problem by 2030 at the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), held in Glasgow, Scotland. According to the teacher, this is a possible and necessary proposal.

Brazil is among the countries that signed the declaration of commitment to collective action to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation to date. However, the Brazilian government is already studying anticipating the goal of ending illegal deforestation in the country by 2027 or 2028.
