What are weather alerts

To avoid panic and misinformation related to weather conditions, the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) standardizes meteorological warnings, made in partnership with other public bodies.

Meteorological warnings are severe weather alerts, divided into three severity categories (yellow, orange and red) and 17 types related to different meteorological phenomena. Alerts include heat waves, exceptional increases or decreases in rainfall, wind, air humidity, among others.

Red warnings are the most serious and indicate the risk of major damage, accidents and preparation for emergency measures. Therefore, INMET only issues red alerts in agreement with the National Civil Defense.
