An event brought together more than 300 volunteers to promote diversity and inclusion with children and young people from Jardim Ângela, in the South Zone of São Paulo, last Friday (13).
Led by United Way Brasil (UWB), the 22nd edition of “Dia Viva Unido Comunidades” had the support of 17 companies aiming to raise awareness among those involved about equity and ESG (acronym for Environmental, Social and Governance) practices.
The event was held at the Santos Mártires Society, a non-profit civil association in the community in the capital of São Paulo. The initiative will also contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) in Brazil.
UWB President Gabriella Bighetti said there was a significant transformation among the participants. “Volunteering is, in fact, a group of nonconformists who will leave here contributing to change.”
Several activities were carried out with the children and the “young powerhouses”. These young people are between 15 and 29 years old and face a context of inequality and systemic racism.
This situation makes access to formal work and study opportunities difficult, leaving people in a socially vulnerable situation.
Among the activities with the children, the volunteers held workshops on black and diverse dolls, inclusion exercises with art and music, and LinkedIn workshops for young people served by the organization.
“This region was very violent until 1996. Since then, connections between companies, organizations, social entities and governments, focused on the social mission, have transformed the reality of this region,” said the manager of Sociedade Santos Mártires, Osni Santos Gomes.
“Dia Viva Unido Comunidades” began a season of actions that should last until November and that will expand to another eleven cities.
According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), more than half of children in early childhood are in families with a monthly income of up to half the minimum wage in Brazil, equivalent to R$706.00.
In total, there are 10 million children between the ages of 0 and 6 in this situation, the vast majority of them black or brown. In addition, 30.3% of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 are unemployed, according to the IBGE.
United Way Brasil is an organization that works with philanthropy to invest in the transformative potential of early childhood and youth.
