Ingestible capsule that vibrates in the stomach can help with weight loss

A vibrating capsule was developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that can be ingested to help with weight loss.

The novelty adopts the tactic of stimulating the same sensors used by the human body to tell that the stomach is full of food or liquids, which generates a feeling of satiety as a response from the brain.

The vibration of the new capsule, which can be ingested through the mouth, simulates the sensation of stomach stretching and, in tests carried out on animals, reduced food intake by 40%, on average.

The researchers believe that, if research points in this direction, the pill could start to be used in humans and become a less invasive tactic to combat obesity, when compared to methods such as gastric balloons and bariatric surgery.

“For those looking to lose weight or control their appetite, it can be taken before each meal,” says Shriya Srinivasan PhD '20, a former graduate student and postdoctoral fellow at MIT.

“This could be really interesting, as it would provide an option that could minimize the side effects we see with other existing pharmacological treatments,” he added.

Srinivasan, who is currently the assistant professor of bioengineering at Harvard University, is the lead author of the new study, which was published Friday in the journal Science Advances.

She believes that this new technology can be manufactured and sold in a much more accessible way to low-income populations than other methods.

“For many populations, some of the most effective therapies for obesity are very expensive. At scale, our device could be manufactured at a very economical price,” he said.

“I would love to see how this would transform care and therapy for people in global healthcare settings who may not have access to some of the more sophisticated or expensive options that are available today.”

Jojo Todynho vents after bariatric surgery

Since undergoing bariatric surgery in early August, Jojo Todynho has been celebrating his new routine on social media. However, he does not hide from fans and internet users the difficulties he faced during this period.

The 26-year-old singer said she had lost the pleasure of eating and that, despite everything, she does not regret having undergone the procedure.

“The reality of a bariatric patient, I can only eat two pieces of chicken. I'm eating a cream. I ordered a salad, but I won't be able to eat it, drinking lemon juice is what I can do”, she began.

“We lose total pleasure in wanting to eat. And you have a very, very bad time. Is bad? AND. I regret? No. But, there is no pleasure, people. Like, Christmas will have everything I love. And I… a little pinch here, a little pinch there, and it’s great”, she said.
