The Federal Court of Rio de Janeiro sentenced influencer Katiuscia Torres Soares, known as Kat Torres, to eight years in prison in a closed regime. The Brazilian is accused of human trafficking and keeping people in conditions similar to slavery in the United States.
According to the decision, the woman was convicted of the crime of human trafficking (corresponding to two years and nine months of imprisonment) and reduction to a condition analogous to slavery (corresponding to five years and three months of imprisonment), a sentence totaling eight years in prison.
Human trafficking
The case of Katiuscia Torres Soares had repercussions in 2022 and, suspected of encouraging Brazilian girls to join her in the United States, the influencer promised a luxurious lifestyle, which included the prospect of marrying successful men, according to “Vice” magazine.
After being taken to the US, photos of the girls appeared on luxury escort websites, where they appeared with their hair dyed dark blonde — similar to Kat — and recorded videos of rituals that were covered by the national media.
In Brazil, however, the girls’ parents reported them missing, creating online campaigns to find them. At the time, former BBB contestant Yasmin Brunet reported Kat in a live broadcast that one of the missing girls was doing (forced by Torres) to divert suspicion and prove that she was safe, which increased the intensity of the search for the girls.
“Vice” magazine pointed out that it was not clear how the influencer managed to get the girls to agree to everything, but clarified that public speculation said that she could have used hypnotism and manipulation, known as ayahuasca, to confuse the women and keep them subordinate — although there is no confirmation of this information.
A CNN contacted the influencer’s defense, but until the publication of this article, there was no response.
