The Covid-19 pandemic certainly threw the global economy into a tailspin. For a while, it looked like a global recession was imminent. However, much to everyone’s surprise, after a few months of pandemic living, the economy actually began to thrive and some industries, such as sports betting online, started to make record dividends.
Now, that the pandemic has been curtailed in many places around the world, some of the industries which grew in popularity during the pandemic have fallen away and are now somewhat irrelevant, such as masks and specialty hand sanitizers.
The industries listed below have all been able to maintain the growth and strength they gained during the pandemic and many of them are even continuing to grow in popularity.
Online gambling and sports betting
First and foremost, the gambling and sports wager industry was especially hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. No one was allowed to enter casinos, much less attend professional sports games, so casinos and sports wagering shops were essentially shuttered for nearly two years.
This had the result of pushing many people who had previously been reluctant to try online gambling. The rising popularity of online trading shows that most of the people who tried out online trading for the first time during the pandemic realized that they liked it!
The sports wager industry was also incredibly creative as it was able to pivot away from placing bets on in-person professional sports as none were happening towards betting on esports, which is another industry that has continued its upward trajectory.
Fitness and wellness
During the pandemic, it was difficult to keep an upbeat and positive attitude and even more difficult not to feel sluggish and unhealthy most of the time while trapped at home. One way to feel both happier and more energized was through at home exercise and wellness routines.
These are two industries, or two sides of the same industry, which have certainly continued to grow following the pandemic. There are now more people than ever who have tried doing yoga at home, who enjoy going on mental health walks, and who have all their favorite skin care, supplement and wellness brands.
Fitness and wellness industries and products are sold to us as promises to make us feel better about ourselves, and that certainly is not going out of style!
Esports and streaming
As mentioned before, esports grew in popularity during the pandemic but it has retained much of its cult-like following. Millions of people now have their own favorite esports games, leagues, teams and players, and it looks as if the sport is only growing in popularity around the world.
Streaming is a related industry which continues to be incredibly popular. These days, most streamers develop their platform on websites such as Twitch by spending time interacting with their fan base and showing off a “slice of life”.
Streaming is also incredibly lucrative for those who are good enough to make a living at it. Some streamers are getting paid millions of dollars a year to interact with their fans, play games and offer commentary. Streaming was a popular way to feel like you were part of a community during the pandemic, and it has continued to be a social outlet for many.
Small business owners
Finally, while not all small business owners have been able to thrive following the pandemic, some have taken the leap to transforming their “side hustle” into a full-time job. Millions of people around the world were thrown into uncertainty during the pandemic and many companies made the decision to lay off portions of their staff.
Economic uncertainty coupled with layoffs led thousands of people to think of other ways they could make a living. Thousands of small companies were launched, and people began selling everything from custom Starbucks cups to brownies and investment planning sessions.
The small business owners who got a taste of the entrepreneur way of life and realized that they enjoyed the hustle and autonomy of running their own business have continued to do so. Many of them are now starting to grow as their customer base grows and their own business skills develop.
The pandemic will undoubtedly be an inspirational story for many business owners in a few decades when they look back on when and why they launched their company.
