Industrial production rises in 11 of the 15 places surveyed in May, says IBGE

Brazilian industrial production grew in 11 of the 15 locations assessed by the Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM Regional), carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The most detailed data was released this Friday (8).

In percentage terms, it symbolizes that approximately 73% of the surveyed states registered greater activity in the industrial sector. In the monthly comparison, the change was positive by 0.3% from April to May, the fourth consecutive positive result.

The highest increases were registered in Amazonas (6.6%) and Mato Grosso (4.6%). However, as these are sparsely populated states and with a smaller share of the segment in the economy, the main contribution to the national result came from Paraná, with an increase of 3.5%.

The result partially reverses the loss of 4.1% recorded by the state of the South in April, as explained by Bernardo Almeida, research analyst.

“The food sector was the one that most influenced the result in Paraná, followed by machinery and equipment, another very important sector in the state’s industry”, explains Almeida.

The second biggest influence was that of Amazonas, driven by the computer equipment industry, electronic and optical products, in addition to the beverage sector. Then comes the impact of the 0.3% increase in São Paulo, the country’s largest industrial park.

The advance in São Paulo is due to the improvement in the sectors of motor vehicles and machinery and equipment.

“This index does not suppress the loss suffered in the previous month of 3.6%. With this result of 0.3% from April to May, São Paulo remains 1.9% below its pre-pandemic level and 23.4% below the highest level in the historical series, in March 2011. , concludes the research coordinator.

Goiás (3.2%), Espírito Santo (2.8%), Santa Catarina (1.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.7%) were other states that presented an increase above the national average. At the other end, there was a decrease in three locations: Pará (13.2%), Rio de Janeiro (4.1%) and Pernambuco (2.4%).

The situation at the moment is better than that of the last 12 months, in which industrial production retreated in nine of the 15 surveyed locations. This is the situation in Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Northeast, Pernambuco, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Pará and Rio Grande do Sul.

Among the positive changes accumulated in the same period, the highlight was the industrial production of Mato Grosso (10.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.4%). Minas Gerais (2%), Espírito Santo (1.3%), Paraná (0.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.4%) also registered high.
