Twenty years have passed since the tsunami that followed the magnitude 9 earthquake in the Indian Ocean killed 220,000 people from 45 nationalities who were enjoying their Christmas holidays in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and other countries. It was the third strongest earthquake ever recorded on the planet. It all started with the 9.1 Richter earthquake that shook Indonesia on December 26, 2004. Twenty minutes later a raging tsunami hit the land. It hit 18 countries of the Indian Ocean and left behind more than 220 thousand dead. On Thursday, in Aceh, Indonesia, ground zero of the devastation, sirens sounded in memory of the victims. Muslims pray over the mass graves, while Catholics hold a Christmas service for Indonesia’s 150,000 dead. The wounds, however, remain open. Since 2004, Southeast Asian states have established cooperation networks. They have now installed tsunami detection systems in the Indian Ocean to prevent a similar disaster in the future.
