The Federal Ministry of Health of India announced today that in the past 24 hours 865 patients died due to complications of COVID-19 and 107,474 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed.
The toll of the pandemic in the Asian giant with 1.35 billion inhabitants officially reached 501,979 dead with a total of 42,188,138 infections. This is the fourth heaviest death toll and the second highest number of infections on the planet.
The so-called active cases are 1.22 million, having decreased by 106,637 in 24 hours.
Experts believe that in fact, the number of victims of the pandemic is much higher than what the Indian authorities announce. Scientists estimate in a recent study published in the journal Science that deaths due to COVID-19 in India had reached 3 million by mid-2021; the government of Narendra Monti called this estimate unfounded.
