In her last publication on social media, journalist and presenter Glória Maria – who died this Thursday (2) from complications from cancer – recalled an interview she gave to her friend and professional colleague Marília Gabriela.
She published on Instagram an excerpt from a participation in the program TV Mulher, on Canal Viva, from six years ago, in which she spoke about racism.
Introduced by Marília Gabriela as a “lifelong friend” and “the first black professional to gain immense visibility on television”, Glória was asked if she still suffers prejudice.
“I continue to suffer. It’s something that doesn’t end. But he has many faces”, replied the presenter.
“Now I’m at a level where people won’t say: ‘Oh no, you don’t do that because you’re black, because you’re black, because you’re Creole.’ Today the thing is much more subtle, elaborate, ”she added.
Glória said that she considers today’s prejudice “much more serious” for reaching points that it did not reach in the past.
“When you’re young and you suffer this, you suffer with an open heart and thinking you’ll get over it. When the moment arrives where I am, then you are absolutely sure that [o preconceito] It’s something you don’t get over and you don’t get used to it,” he concluded.
Marília Gabriela mourned the death of her friend
Shortly after the news of Glória Maria’s death, Marília Gabriela went to Instagram to mourn her friend’s passing.
“Oh, how sad. I have just learned of the death of this beautiful person, dear friend and colleague, Glória Maria. What a shit, what a drug, what an immense loss for those who, in addition to being a professional, knew her and exchanged joy with her at parties, productive conversations, memories not to be forgotten. Goodbye beautiful, you will be sorely missed. Rest In Peace, this irritating phrase for a true yet innocuous wish,” she wrote.
Gloria Maria dies
The journalist and presenter Glória Maria died, on the morning of this Thursday (2), in Rio de Janeiro due to complications from brain cancer.
The information was confirmed by TV Globo, the company for which she had been working since the early 1970s.
“In 2019, Glória was diagnosed with lung cancer, successfully treated with immunotherapy, and brain metastasis, treated surgically – initially also successfully. In the middle of last year, the journalist began a new phase of treatment to combat new brain metastases, which, unfortunately, has ceased to be effective in recent days”, reported the station’s advisory in a note.
“Glória marked her career as one of the most talented professionals in Brazilian journalism, leaving a legacy of accomplishments, examples and pioneering spirit for Globo and its professionals”, added TV Globo.
The journalist leaves two daughters, Laura and Maria.
Glória had been hospitalized at the Copa Star hospital, in Copacabana, since January 4th. In December of last year, the doyen of global journalism was removed from the presentation of “Globo Repórter” to take care of her health.
It hadn’t been her first removal for medical reasons. Glória Maria was away for almost two years from presenting the program due to, initially, a medical leave to operate on a brain tumor, at the end of 2019, and then due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
