The bill proposes to tax income from cryptocurrencies when the trader takes funds to Fiat, or buys goods or services for cryptocurrencies. Translations between their own cryptocurrencies will not be taxed. To pay taxes, Slovenian traders will have to provide a full history of transactions for the year, after which the tax will be calculated automatically.
“The purpose of the taxation of crypto assets is not to get a significant amount of tax revenues. We consider it illogical and unreasonable that one of the most speculative financial instruments is not taxed at all, ”said the Minister of Finance of Slovenia Klemen Bostjancic.
A member of the Opposition Party “New Slovenia” and a member of the National Assembly of Slovenia Yernej Vrtovec (Jernej Vrtovec) opposed the bill. According to him, such a proposal may suppress the growth of cryptocurrencies in the country:
“Slovenia has the opportunity to become a crypto center, a country, friendly to cryptocurrencies. But with such government proposals, we will again miss the moment. Due to excessive taxation, we will see how young entrepreneurs and capital will go abroad. Taxes must encourage, not to strangle! ”
Public consultations on the bill will be held until May 5. In case of approval, the new tax will enter into force on January 1, 2026.
Recall that in 2023, Slovenia introduced a tax on the withdrawal of cryptocurrencies and crypto payments in the amount of 10%. Also in 2022, the government proposed to introduce a tax of 5% on operations with digital assets, but the bill was not approved.
