In new complaint, US Justice accuses Trump of trying to interfere in the result of the 2020 election

United States Special Attorney Jack Smith filed a new complaint this Tuesday (01) against former President Donald Trump, regarding the investigation into efforts to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential elections, which culminated in the invasion of the Capitol, on January 6, 2021. In all, the document cites four counts: conspiracy to defraud the United States, influencing witnesses, conspiracy against the rights of citizens, and conspiracy to obstruct official process.

The Department of Justice of the United States informed that he must testify this Thursday (03), at 16:00 local time (17:00 in Brasilia). The indictment names six co-conspirators, yet to name names.

This is the third time that Trump has been the target of allegations. Smith charged Trump in the probe of classified documents in June, and a Manhattan grand jury charged the former president with business fraud in March. The former president, who is trying to return to the White House in the 2024 presidential election, has pleaded not guilty in both cases.

For the past few days, Trump and his advisers have been preparing to respond to the impending indictment. The former president’s team lined up surrogates, influencers and allies to respond immediately to the new allegations, and also prepared a series of pre-written statements and videos defending the former president’s actions before and on January 6, 2021, which they intend to send to supporters.

“We have a lot of products and content ready to postpone the Jan. 6 material, not unlike what we’ve done before,” a Trump adviser told CNN.

The Trump campaign must rely on the playbook they used on previous indictments to frame any further allegations as interference in his 2024 presidential campaign, as well as painting Smith as a Trump target for purely political reasons — including allegations that the Justice Department it is unfairly placing more focus on his behavior than that of President Joe Biden.

On his profile on the Truth Social network, Trump responded to the new accusations and accused Biden of politically using the US Department of Justice to harm his election campaign. “This is nothing more than the latest corrupt chapter in the pathetic attempt by Ffamily WBiden’s rhyme it’s yours equipped Department of Justice from interfering in the 2024 Presidential Election, in which President Trump is undisputed favorite”.
