In Argentina, Mauro Vieira asks Israel’s chancellor to review vetoes against Brazilians and their families in Gaza

Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira personally asked Israel’s Chancellor, Eli Cohen, for the country to reevaluate the vetoes on 24 Brazilians and Palestinian family members who were banned from leaving the Gaza Strip.

The conversation took place on Saturday (9), in Buenos Aires, where the two ministers were to attend the inauguration of the new president of Argentina, Javier Milei on Sunday (10).

Vieira interceded for the Israeli Foreign Ministry to speak to the security bodies responsible for analyzing requests for the evacuation of Gaza. Cohen promised to check the situation and respond.

Israel vetoed 24 people from the list of 102 names sent by Brazil for repatriation. Permission was given to 78 people. With the ban on some relatives, only 47 people crossed the Rafah crossing, on the border with Egypt, and decided to stay in Gaza with their relatives.

According to members of the Itamaraty, Israel did not provide an explanation for the vetoes of the requests. In a statement, the Brazilian government informed that those who did not have authorization will remain in Rafah awaiting a new chance to leave Gaza.

According to Itamaraty, of the 24 vetoed by Israel, seven are people with Brazilian citizenship.

Of the 47 people who left Gaza, 11 Brazilian-Palestinian binationals and 36 Palestinians. In addition, there are 27 minors, 16 women, including two elderly women, and four adult men.

This Sunday, a young woman who was already in Cairo joined the group that left Gaza. As a result, 48 people embarked from the Egyptian capital towards Brazil.
