In a will, Pope asks for a simple tomb and tombstone with inscription: Franciscus

The Vatican shared a will of Pope Francis on Monday afternoon (21). In the document, signed on June 29, 2022, the Holy Father sought to reinforce his will as to his burial.

The Pope expressed that he would like his remains to be placed in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, in a simple grave, excavated in the ground, without decoration and only with the inscription “Franciscus”.

Finally, Francis left the message that he offered “the Lord the suffering that was present in the last part of my life for world peace and the fraternity among peoples.”

“Feeling that the end of my earthly life approaches and with living hope in eternal life, I want to express my will only with the place of my burial. I have always trusted my life and my priestly and episcopal ministry to the mother of our Lord, Santa Maria. Therefore, I ask my remains to rest waiting for the day of resurrection in the papal Basilica of St. Mary Maggiore,” says the document.

“I wish my last earthly journey end in this former Marian Sanctuary where I was going to pray at the beginning and end of each apostolic trip to trust my intentions to the Immaculate Mother with confidence and thank her for her docile maternal care. […] The tomb must be on earth; Simple, without private decoration and with the only inscription: Franciscus. ”

Francisco’s tomb will be prepared in the niche of the side ship between the Paulina chapel and the Sforza chapel of the papal basilica.

First Latin American and Jesuit to take over the Holy See, Pope Francis passed away on Monday morning at 7:35 am, due to irreversible heart stroke and heart failure.

The Pope’s body will be placed in a coffin later this Monday. On the morning of Wednesday (23), will begin the Holy Father’s wake, open to the faithful.

The date of the funeral, a ceremony that will precede the burial of Francis, has not yet been released.
