The Itamaraty condemned, this Tuesday (18), the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) powered by solid fuel by North Korea.
The missile was fired last Thursday (13) and flew about 1,000 km before hitting waters east of North Korea.
Developing a solid-fuel ICBM has long been seen as a key goal for North Korea, as it could help it engage its missiles more quickly in the event of war.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un guided the test and warned that it will cause enemies “to experience a clearer security crisis, with extreme uneasiness and horror, until they abandon their senseless thoughts and reckless acts”.
In a note, the Itamaraty stated that this type of missile “represents a development with a destabilizing impact in the region.”
“In line with its performance as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Brazil defends that political and diplomatic engagement is the best way to achieve the objective of a stable, peaceful and nuclear-free Korean Peninsula”, adds the note.
“Brazil will continue to play a constructive role with a view to creating the necessary conditions for the reduction of tensions and the resumption of negotiations for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula”, concludes the statement.
