The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this Saturday (7), in a note, that it “received with surprise” the unilateral decision of the Venezuelan government to suspend Brazil’s custody over the Argentine Embassy in Caracas.
“The Brazilian government was surprised by the Venezuelan government’s communication that it intends to revoke its consent for Brazil to protect Argentina’s interests in Venezuela,” said the Itamaraty.
The Brazilian government stated that international rules determine that it is up to Argentina to indicate a replacement country to represent it in Caracas.
“In accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic Relations and Consular Relations, Brazil will remain in charge of the custody and defense of Argentine interests until the Argentine government indicates another State acceptable to the Venezuelan government to exercise the aforementioned functions.”
Finally, Brazil cited the inviolability of embassies. “The Brazilian government emphasizes in this context, in accordance with the Vienna Conventions, the inviolability of the facilities of the Argentine diplomatic mission, which currently house six Venezuelan asylum seekers in addition to assets and archives.”

On Friday night (6), the Maduro government announced that it will suspend Brazilian custody of Argentine representations in Venezuela, assumed in August, after the expulsion of Argentine diplomats by Maduro.
On the morning of this Saturday (7), Itamaraty received a note from Venezuela formalizing the decision.
Brazil responded officially by stating the need to designate a replacement country before ceasing to exercise this function.
According to diplomatic sources, as far as Brazil is concerned, Argentina will not be left without custody of its diplomatic headquarters.
The main concern is with the six opposition members who are taking refuge in the Argentine embassy residence in Caracas. On Friday night (6), they posted videos of a police siege in front of the place.
