Imprisoned in a closed regime, former anesthetist may not be able to attend college

Former anesthesiologist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, arrested for raping a patient during labor in 2022, may not be able to study Tourism at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj). The man took the entrance exam at the Pedrolino Werling de Oliveira prison, in the GericinĂ³ Penitentiary Complex, in Bangu, in the West Zone of Rio, and was approved. His name appears on the list published on the 11th to attend graduation in the 1st semester of 2024, between the afternoon and evening.

Inmates can take the entrance exam. However, Giovanni is serving his sentence in a closed regime and the course he was approved for is in person. To be able to attend classes, he would need a release permit or sentence progression. The case is being processed under judicial secrecy and officially there is still no definition as to whether it will receive a permit or progression.

The Public Defender's Office, responsible for his defense, said that he is detained in provisional condition, but did not give details about the supposed request for habeas corpus, for example, precisely because the case is under judicial secrecy.

Giovanni awaits trial. The last hearing in the case took place in September last year. There is still no date for a new hearing. In December, his registration as a doctor was revoked by the Federal Council of Medicine. The process prevents the former anesthetist from carrying out any medical activity in Brazil.

In July 2022, the then anesthetist was recorded by co-workers while sexually abusing a sedated patient in labor at the Hospital da Mulher Heloneida Studart, in Vilar dos Teles, SĂ£o JoĂ£o de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense.
