Illegal armed groups expanded their control over Colombian territory in 2023, seeking to govern communities that had their human rights violated, a UN report said on Wednesday (28).
The South American country is facing an internal conflict that has lasted more than six decades, with a death toll exceeding 450,000, despite President Gustavo Petro's efforts to achieve peace with armed groups, such as guerrillas and criminal gangs.
The UN report revealed a 14.4% increase in the number of cities victims of violence, from 180 in 2022 to 206 in 2023.
The International Federation for Human Rights, together with local organizations, demanded that authorities protect the Viwa indigenous people in the northern Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, as 300 of their members have had to seek shelter in other cities, such as Riohacha, to escape clashes between armed groups.
In 2023, the UN reported 62,967 cases of displaced people and 134 cases of recruitment of children and adolescents.
