President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Thursday (16th) that, if “it depends on him”, former president Dilma Rousseff will be president of the Brics bank — a group of countries formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The statement was given during an exclusive interview with the anchor of CNN Daniela Lima, this morning, in Brasilia.
“If it’s up to me, she’ll be [presidente do banco do Brics]. Dilma is an extraordinary figure. If I had not been president and, yes, Dilma’s political minister, what happened would not have happened. I think there was a lack of conversation, of patience, but she is an extraordinary woman, worthy of much respect, and the PT adores her”, said the president.
“She is very technically competent. If she is president of the Brics, it will be a wonderful thing for the Brics and for Brazil.”
Former president Dilma Rousseff was appointed by Lula to head the New Development Bank (NBD), a BRICS institution. Headquartered in Shanghai, the so-called “Banco dos Brics” aims to finance works for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in the countries that make up the group.
On the scheduled trip to Beijing, in the second half of March, Lula is expected to take Dilma. The strategy would be to transform the former president’s presence into one more element of pressure for the change in command of Banco dos Brics, currently led by Brazilian businessman Marcos Troyjo.
According to reports made to CNN the petista has discussed the subject with close allies, including specialists in the Asian country, and has consumed content related to the history and economic development of China.
Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has already spoken with Marcos Troyjo. According to reports, the current Banco dos Brics representative could leave his post and occupy a role in the management of Governor Tarcísio Freitas, in São Paulo.
One of the criticisms leveled at the current head of the NDB is that he was practically not at the bank’s headquarters last year and was unable to reverse the institution’s flow of disbursements.
Troyjo took charge of the institution in May 2020 and has a mandate until 2025. Former special secretary of Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Economy, under the command of Paulo Guedes, he has been labeled a Bolsonarist by the Lula government.
CNN anchor Daniela Lima interviewed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) directly from the Planalto Palace in Brasília. The entirety of Lula’s first interview with CNN Brasil since he took office will air this Thursday (16), at 6 pm, on channel 577, Prime Video, YouTube, TikTok and Kwai.
