Following the specialists of the analytical company Canalys, their colleagues from IDC published their forecast related to the supply of foldable smartphones. Unlike the Canalys forecast, the IDC forecast covers the period through 2025, not 2024.
While agreeing with Canalys analysts on the main point – that the supply of foldable smartphones will grow rapidly, IDC specialists disagree with them on specific numbers. So, according to their calculations, 7.1 million devices of this category were shipped in 2021, while Canalys counted 8.9 million units. IDC believes foldable device shipments are up 264.3% compared to 2020, while Canalys cites 148%.
As for the forecast itself, IDC expects 27.6 million foldable smartphones to be released in 2025. This value corresponds to a growth of 69.9% per year from 2020 to 2025. Recall that Canalys is confident that the bar of 30 million units will be taken as early as 2024.
It remains to add that in 2021 the share of foldable smartphones in total shipments was 0.5%, and by 2025 it will increase to 1.8%.
