ICC prosecutor asks Maduro to release prisoners “for political reasons”

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, asked the government of Nicolás Maduro this Monday (2) to release minors and civilians detained in Venezuela “for political reasons”.

“After this year’s elections, I insisted in my communications with Venezuela and public statements on the need to protect the rights of civilians, including children, who must be released if they are detained for political reasons, or of anyone peacefully protesting.” , Khan said in his speech at the annual meeting of ICC member countries.

Khan highlighted that the court’s independent investigations “remain active” and that Venezuela’s lack of action puts at risk the possibility of advancing the principle of “complementarity”.

“I have not seen the concrete implementation of laws and practices in Venezuela that I expected. The ball is in Venezuela’s court. The path of complementarity is running out,” he warned.

The prosecutor added that it is important that representatives of the High Commissioner for Human Rights can enter Venezuela: “They have already promised me in writing and they must cooperate in a more tangible way with my office”, he stated.

THE CNN is trying to get a reaction from the Maduro government and the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office.

The Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, told the press on November 11 that there are no children detained in Venezuela following the post-election protests, but acknowledged that the minors behind bars are “some” teenagers whose ages vary between 16 and 17 years old.
