Ibama monitors risk of fires after heat wave warning in Brazil

The Ministry of the Environment has been monitoring the increased risk of forest fires in light of the heat wave that arrives in Brazil this week.

A CNN , Minister Marina Silva stated that the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) is on alert. The structure is responsible for Prevfogo, the federal fire prevention program.

The biggest concern is the weather conditions in the South, Southeast and Central-West regions, due to the low air humidity. This is the dry period in the Pantanal region, where there is a higher incidence of fires.

In 2023, Ibama reinforced the total number of brigade members who are part of the program. In total, Prevfogo has 2,101 brigade members. The number is 17.5% higher than in 2022.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has been issuing meteorological warnings of danger due to the heat wave since Monday (18).

According to Inmet’s forecast, thermometers should approach 40ºC. In some regions, temperatures may reach up to 45ºC.

The red alert, of great danger, has already been initiated for areas in the states of Mato Grosso, Pará, Tocantins, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul.

In these places, the temperature can be 5ºC above average for a period of more than 5 days.
