The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), investigates the incidents that have occurred at Figueira Beach, in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul.
According to the Public Prosecution Service of Mato Grosso do Sul (MPMS), the investigation began from the complaint of several fish attacks that occurred in the municipality of Bonito. Cases of injuries and amputation of limbs were reported after bites of the unknown species.
Ibama teams were sent on Wednesday (16), to identify the aquatic animal. Technicians are capturing fishing fish to collect samples in order to produce a technical report that explains the cause of the incident.
According to Ibama, the suspicion is that the species in question is the tambaqui native fish of the Amazon basin, and considered exotic in the Paraguay Basin. However, they analyze the possibility of being the tambacu hybrid result of the crossing of Tambaqui with Pacu, prohibited for aquaculture in the Paraguay Basin.
The investigation analyzes the need for fish removal and the possibility of bioinvasion, when there is the introduction of an exotic species in the habitat of wild species, causing problems for the entire region.
