I was born on top of an electric trio, says Bell Marques to CNN

the Bahian singer Bell Marques is unanimity when it comes to Carnival in Salvador. Former lead singer of the band Chiclete com Banana, he is one of the greatest icons of revelry in the capital of Bahia and has marked several generations over more than 4 decades of success.

At the age of 70, Bell is full of energy and drew crowds wherever he went on the Barra-Ondina Circuit. He paraded from Thursday (16) to this Tuesday (21), with nine shows and about 40 hours of music.

The artist spoke to CNN before the departure of one of its blocks, “Vumbora”:

“Man, the tension was high on Thursday. I was very anxious”, said Bell about returning to Carnival in Salvador after a 2-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I am very happy, this return was better than we expected”, he added. He also said that the joy of everyone who took to the streets this year reminded him of the great carnivals he has already experienced in the capital of Bahia.

“This is really cool because it puts the name of Salvador and Bahia up there”.

When asked what Salvador’s Carnival is for him, Bell didn’t hesitate: “It’s my story. It’s all I’ve known good in my life. […] I was born on top of an electric trio, I do it with the greatest affection”.

HITS OF SUCCESS

“Voa Voa”, “Quero Chiclete”, “100% Você”, “Nana Ê”: there is no shortage of hits when it comes to Bell Marques. According to him, what most marked his story was “Cry of War”.

However, he mentioned two when saying that they are the ones that revelers most ask for and sing with him: “Diga Que Valeu” and “Não Vou Chorar. “And there are a few more,” recalled Bell, laughing and as cheerful as ever.

ANIMATION OF REVELERS

Between the strings of “Vumbora”, the mood was one of joy. “Bell is wonderful, Salvador is the best Carnival in the world”, said Ana Carolina Cerqueira, a reveler who traveled from Rio de Janeiro to Salvador.

“Accompanying Bell is indescribable. If Bell sings an ‘Ave Maria’ or an ‘Our Father’ OK beautiful”, said Elísio Alves, one of several fans who followed the trio along the 4.5 km route from Farol da Barra to the Ondina neighborhood.
