Mariarosa is 50 years old, has three children and the tried but serene voice of someone who is finally trying to leave behind a great worry. I reach her by phone in Calabria, where she lives and works as an insurance agent, a few weeks after the operation she underwent in Rome.
Mariarosa underwent surgery for a prophylactic hysterioexectomy with BRCA mutation (the so-called Angelina Jolie gene), which exposes her to an increased risk of gynecological neoplasms. An operation that involved the removal of the uterus and ovaries but which also made her the first patient in Europe to undergo gynecological surgery with Hugoa new robot-assisted surgical system (RAS) developed by the Medtronic company.

“It was Dr. Giorgia Monterossi of Professor Scambia’s team who proposed me this intervention in robotic mode”, explains the patient. «She had visited me a few days earlier, noting the presence of a polycystic and enlarged endometrium. She explained to me that I would have the opportunity to be operated in the traditional way or with this new robotic technology which would have been much faster and would have left me very few stitches. With this intervention, moreover, I would not have had repercussions even after the surgical course and I would have recovered much more easily. I accepted with confidence and in fact it was just like that: the day after the operation I was on my feet and two days later already out of the hospital ».
The operation, performed under general anesthesia, lasted just over an hour. “The thing that struck me most is that I arrived in the operating room and found nothing of the classic room: only the light and a screen»Says Mariarosa. “I attended all the preparation together with the medical team of Professor Scambia, who have been by my side continuously”.
What was your biggest fear?
“That there might be something more than the diagnosis that had already been made. Not for nothing, the first thing I said to the doctor when we planned the surgery was: “I have three children and I would like to see them grow up”. She replied that she would do everything possible so that everything could happen in the best way and in a short time. So that I could get back to my work soon and take care of my kids. ”
What did you think when you woke up after the intervention?
«I woke up serene and super pampered. To reassure me there was also the fact that the gynecology department is a very special department; “Oncological gynecology” is a word that scares a lot, however, finding yourself in the hands of professionals who know how to take care of you in all respects and who make you feel that everything will be fine, that’s really what makes the difference ».
