“I have always worked and now I have to ask for help”: an account of the war in Odessa

residents of odessa are trying to find some normalcy as the threat of a Russian attack from the Black Sea looms over the southern city of Ukraine.

“It’s our home. And we can live a normal life. But just for now. We don’t know what tomorrow or in a week will be,” law student Taimur Kravchenko told Ed Lavandera of CNNwhile having a coffee with his friends at a market.

But the city center is littered with anti-tank barricades as a way of fortifying themselves against an invasion, and Ukrainians displaced from areas that have seen the worst fighting have fled to the city in search of food and shelter.

Olga Petkovich, her husband and their six children fled their village through a forest to escape the bombings. Russian soldiers broke into her home and took everything, according to her husband.

“When we got here, the volunteers told us to say what we needed to, but I’m ashamed.

I’ve worked all my life and I’ve never asked anyone for anything. Now I have to ask,” she said, tears welling in her eyes.

Her daughter wiped away her tears and asked, “Mom, why are you crying?”

“Because they were bombing everything on us,” Petkovich replied.
