Hurricane Debby causes cocaine packages to resurface on Florida beach

About 25 packages of cocaine weighing about 70 kg were washed ashore on a beach in Islamorada, Florida, on Sunday (4), according to a post on social media by the US Customs and Border Patrol.

According to the Miami agency, a person discovered the drugs and alerted authorities.

The seized cocaine has a market value of over US$1 million, approximately R$5.7 million.

Samuel Briggs, acting chief of the U.S. Border Patrol’s Miami Sector, shared a photo of the packages in a post on X.

Islamorada is located in the Florida Keys, about 80 miles from Key West, Florida.

Debby was considered a category one hurricane, but lost strength and became a tropical storm on Monday afternoon (5).

The phenomenon is moving at 120 km/h and is expected to weaken further while over land. Rain and flooding are still expected in Florida.
