This Wednesday (23), Cardinals shared reflections on Pope Francis after participating in the procession that accompanied the Pontiff’s coffin to St. Peter’s Basilica.
When asked what he remembers about the pontiff, Cardinal Marc Ouellet said, “The humility, bravery, his missionary spirit, all that.”
Cardinal Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo commented that, when evaluating Francisco’s papacy, the most identifiable is his efforts for peace.
“Unfortunately, what he said at the beginning of the papacy, ‘there is a third international war in pieces’, grew, the pieces are joining and you almost already have an international war,” he said.
Sorondo also recalled that Francis reinforced peace. “So that was his great concern, as he used to talk about peace every week at Angelus,” he added.
The pontiff’s body was placed on the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday (23), after the open coffin was taken in solemn procession of the Santa Marta residence chapel, through different points, to the place.
Red -hat cardinals, priests, friars carrying candles and helmets slowly walked through the sun -illuminated terrace.
A male choir sang psalms and prayers in Latin, while the great bells of the Basilica Badalav.
Pope Francis, 88, died on Monday (21) in his room at Santa Marta residence after suffering a stroke.
The pontiff was erected on a wooden platform by 14 coffins, dressed in white gloves and black suits.
